American singer/songwriter Michael Hurley has been labelled everything from “elusive master of American folk” to “national treasure”. Despite this, he’s always managed to keep an outsider-y image. Having released his debut album ‘First Songs’ back in 1964, he’s a true folk veteran, admired by younger musicians from Devendra Banhart (who even released Hurley’s ‘Ancestral Swamp’ on his own label) to Cat Power and the likes. During an on-off career of more than fourty years, Hurley’s discography can fill almost 24 hours. His music is rather old-fashioned, featuring, at times, eccentric folky sounds, and his albums are frequently filled with his signature characters: werewolves, wild ducks and whiskey drinkers, figures that also make regular appearances on his homemade album cover scribblings.
But Hurley’s not the only one on stage: Country/folk acts Paper Wings, Daniel Higgs and a number of DJs from Ghent’s Kraak label will add their flavour to the night as well.
We have five pairs of tickets to give-away for Michael Hurley’s gig at L’Ancienne Belgique next Wednesday, 11th April. All you need to do is share our Facebook fan page and send a screenshot of it to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Michael Hurley’ in the subject line. The first five readers to do so will get their names + 1 added to the guest list.
